New HSBC building achieves first-ever inclusivity award

The Construction Industry Council (CIC) has awarded its inaugural Inclusive Environment Recognition at the project level to HSBC UK for its new office in Bede Island Business Park, Leicester.

This accolade follows previous honours for the banking giant's branches in Sheffield City and Loughborough, both recognised for their exceptional commitment to inclusive design. The Bede Island office is a vital component of HSBC UK’s strategy to improve accessibility and inclusiveness, featuring new design standards implemented in 2022 that surpass local building codes.

More than 370 HSBC UK employees will transition from De Montfort Street to this new location, which boasts:

  • ergonomic workstations and advanced technology-enabled collaboration areas
  • versatile spaces, including focus zones, a dining area, and relaxation areas
  • enhanced wellbeing amenities, such as a decompression room, a parenting room, a multi-faith room, and unisex shower facilities; and
  • biophilic design elements aimed at creating a healthier and more inviting work environment.

Clemmie Cook, Head of Corporate Services for HSBC UK and Europe, said: "We are thrilled to receive this accreditation from the CIC for our new Leicester office. The design prioritizes comfort and efficiency for our colleagues while enhancing our service to customers through a collaborative, dynamic, and inclusive workspace."

The CIC’s Inclusive Environments Certification is awarded to organisations that adhere to the CIC Essentials Principles Guide for Clients, Developers, and Contractors, ensuring the creation of accessible and inclusive environments. This guide outlines six key principles applicable from project inception through to final appraisal.

"Putting customers at the center of our operations is our top priority, starting with inclusivity and accessibility," commented Sally Williams, HSBC UK’s Head of Branch Network, said. "I am incredibly proud that our new Loughborough branch has received this esteemed recognition. Whether launching a new branch like Loughborough or refurbishing an existing one, we follow the blueprint established by our innovative Sheffield branch to ensure the highest levels of accessibility for both customers and colleagues."

Graham Watts, CIC Chief Executive, commended HSBC’s achievements: "HSBC UK deserves recognition for its ongoing commitment to creating inclusive environments. The bank’s proactive approach to inclusivity sets a standard and reinforces that accessibility is a core value."
