Council bucks the trend on housing

The London Borough of Haringey is bucking the trend by building more than 700 new council homes, with aims for 3,000 homes by 2031 and more than 2,000 already underway or completed.

The programme has seen a number of projects completed across the borough in 2024, including 131 homes at council rent at Walter Tull House in Tottenham Hale and Nilgun Canver Court in Wood Green providing 80 homes.

A key part of the council’s approach is a bespoke programme with one in five homes wheelchair accessible and/or adaptable and an expert team co-designing individual homes to meet the needs of those with complex disabilities.

Sarah Williams, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning, said: “Reaching the 700 mark as part of our commitment to provide a new generation of affordable, high-quality council homes is a significant milestone.

“A council home offers stability, safety and the chance to put down real roots in the community, so I’m really pleased we remain on track to deliver 3,000 by 2031.”
