BSR announces extension period to competence assessment deadline

The HSE has announced a transitional extension which will allow building inspectors in England who are registered at Class 1 and enrolled in a recognised competence assessment scheme to continue to inspect building work for a further 13 weeks from 6 April 2024.

This extension period means that individuals who are working through the process of competence assessment can continue to inspect building work at the class they have applied for until 6 July 2024.

From that date, building control professionals will have to demonstrate their competence and register with the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) to perform Building Control work in England. The BSR, led by the HSE, sets rigorous standards that all inspectors must meet. This means that every individual practicing in this field will be held to the same high bar, guaranteeing a consistent level of competence and code of conduct across the board.

“This is good news for all building control professionals progressing through one of the three approved competence assessment schemes, but there is no time to delay," said CABE's Interim CEO Richard Harral. "All building inspectors need to make sure that they are registered with the BSR at Class 1 before 6 April 2024 and are working to submit their application to an approved scheme."

For those who have not passed the assessment first time, the extension provides an opportunity to take feedback onboard and re-apply.

CABE encourages all building control professionals to submit their application to their chosen assessment scheme as soon as possible. This will help to ensure that they can upgrade their registration before the extension deadline in July.

Any building inspector who has not registered at Class 1 and not enrolled in a competence assessment scheme will not be able to undertake restricted activities and functions from 6 April 2024.

The Stage One CABE Building Inspector Competence Assessment Scheme is open for CABE Members, and you are invited to complete the Stage 1 Application Form and submit your CPD record here.
